This moment has been 60 years, 10 months, and 5 days in the making. Everything that inspired me to start coaching feels as though it was imprinted in my DNA the day I was born. Add to that a lifetime of successes, failures, and countless interactions—some uplifting, others challenging—and you have my story. My five career changes. My countless mindset shifts. A full range of emotions from bliss and joy to heartbreak and grief. These experiences have shaped me and taught me the importance of life-work balance, resilience, and embracing change.
Each morning, I wake with gratitude for another chance to live, breathe, and grow. Gratitude that motivates me to make intentional choices for the future. For example, I think of the lives I’ll help transform, the ripple effects of their growth, and my own dream of a life where life-work balance is at the forefront—a life in Europe, filled with intentional living, where I don’t need a car.
Life-Work Balance Starts with a Choice
Recently, I read an email from a coach who used the term “life-work balance.” Yes, you read that correctly. Life-work balance. It’s counter-cultural (save that for a future post). That phrase immediately struck a chord with me. Try Googling “life-work balance” and see what you get. For much of my life (and I’m sure many of yours), I believed work always came first. My upbringing and society reinforced this narrative—that life was something to be squeezed into the gaps, only if there was time. However, four years ago, I chose to rewrite that story. I decided to prioritize life over work.
Making this shift was anything but easy. In fact, it required deliberate mindset changes, trust in myself, and a commitment to live differently. Today, I see life-work balance as the foundation for a joyful and meaningful life. Whether it’s enjoying a summer holiday, taking a long walk after dinner in Italy with your beloved, or savoring a cappuccino with friends, or dancing – these are the moments that matter. Therefore, life is about creating space for what fulfills you, not just what pays the bills.
Redefining What Life Means
Life is so much more than tasks, deadlines, or income. Instead, true fulfillment comes from the connections we make, the moments we savor, and the courage we summon to pursue what truly matters. Consequently, life-work balance isn’t just a concept—it’s a way of living. It’s about showing up every day with intention, facing fears head-on, and trusting that you’re enough.
Midlife Transformation and the Power of Change
Starting over at midlife can feel overwhelming, but it’s also an incredible opportunity. For instance, at 50, I began graduate school for mental health counseling—a leap that required courage and faith. By 54, I had earned my degree. Now, six years later, I’m still growing, still transforming, and still choosing life-work balance as my compass. Fear doesn’t dictate my choices anymore—I do. With many more adventures and passeggiatas ahead, I know the best is yet to come. Maybe even a tap dancing class.
